Weird VW Design Quirk or am I just nuts?

Intermittentwipercontrol

So, let me preface this by saying, I've had my Volkswagen Jetta for almost 2 years now, and aside from some small issues here and there, I am really happy with it.  But, today I'm sitting at a red light and it's raining; just enough to have to use the intermittent wipers. Have a look at the attached picture of the intermittent wiper control to understand what I'll be ranting about. What the heck does that graphic mean? As a user, we can just guess really, because to me, this graphic suggests two possible meanings.

Is it saying, when I move the switch from left to right, the wipers go faster? OR Is it saying that when I move the switch from left to right, the period in between the wipe action gets longer, thus the wipers slow down? It is just not completely obvious to me at first glance; maybe I'm crazier than I thought and it's absolutely obvious to other owners.

So, how would I go about improving this? The goal is to take the guesswork out right? Maybe on the left, a small turtle, and on the right a bunny (maybe too cutesy?) Ok, what about a timer graphic (a clock face, or stopwatch face or something), that would clearly indicate to me that the spectrum is dealing, exclusively, with the period in between wipes. So, left is very quick period in between wipes (faster) and right is very long period in between wipes (slower).

Any other VW owners notice this? Or am I being stupid here?

Oh! and for those who are dying to know: The real interaction is left = slower and right = faster
